This Free Tool Lets You Run Windows Apps on Linux Without Wine
Switching from Windows to Linux sounds great—until you realize that some of your favorite Windows apps still don't have good Linux versions.
That's where WinBoat comes in.
WinBoat is a free, open-source tool that lets you run Windows applications on Linux with a surprisingly seamless experience. And unlike Wine, it doesn't try to translate Windows apps directly into Linux.
What Is WinBoat?
WinBoat takes a different approach.
Instead of using Wine as a compatibility layer, it runs a real Windows environment inside Linux using virtualization and container technologies. It then uses FreeRDP to bring individual Windows application windows onto your Linux desktop.
The result is that you can launch a Windows application while continuing to use your Linux desktop normally.
You don't necessarily have to keep switching between a Linux desktop and a traditional full-screen Windows virtual machine.
Why Is WinBoat Interesting?
The biggest advantage is compatibility.
Because WinBoat uses an actual Windows environment, applications that depend on Windows-specific components have a better chance of working than they might through a compatibility layer.
You can also access your Linux home folder from Windows, making it easier to move files between the two environments.
This could be particularly useful for people who have moved to Linux but still need applications such as Microsoft Office, business software or other Windows-only programs.
How Does WinBoat Work?
The basic setup looks like this:
Linux → Docker/Podman → Windows VM → Windows apps → FreeRDP → Linux desktop
WinBoat uses KVM for virtualization and Docker or Podman for its containerized setup. FreeRDP and Windows RemoteApp technology are then used to display Windows applications as individual windows on your Linux desktop.
So, despite looking like a Linux application, the Windows software is actually running inside Windows.
What Do You Need?
WinBoat currently requires a few things before you can get started.
According to the project's documentation, the basic requirements include:
- At least 4GB of RAM
- At least 2 CPU threads
- Around 32GB of free storage
- Hardware virtualization enabled in your BIOS/UEFI
- Docker or Podman
- FreeRDP 3.x
- KVM support
Docker Desktop is currently not supported, so Linux users should use the regular Docker setup or supported Podman configuration.
Is WinBoat Better Than Wine?
Not necessarily—it's simply a different approach.
Wine translates Windows API calls so Windows applications can run on Linux without running a complete Windows installation.
WinBoat, on the other hand, runs real Windows in a virtualized environment and integrates the resulting applications with the Linux desktop.
That can provide better compatibility for certain Windows-only applications, but it also means WinBoat has more overhead than Wine.
There Are Some Limitations
WinBoat isn't a perfect replacement for Windows.
The project is currently in beta, so users should expect occasional bugs and compatibility problems.
GPU-heavy applications can also be problematic because GPU acceleration is still being developed. The project also notes limitations with applications that require kernel-level anti-cheat systems.
So, if you're expecting every Windows game or professional application to work perfectly, WinBoat isn't quite there yet.
